I never had the opportunity to meet Bert Cebular... and now I never will, at least on this side of reality. The founder of NYCeWheels, the tiny e-bike shop in the heart of 'Gotham' died tragically in a paragliding accident. According the Bicycle Retailer, the 47-year-old Cebular " died when he lost control of his powered paraglider, which broke through the icy surface of the Wallkill River in Wawayanda, New York, about 70 miles north of Manhattan."
NYCeWheels does much to promote cycling in general - it sells compact folding bike from Dahon, ideal of apartment dwellers with limited space -and e-bikes, in particular, being among the first to introduce them in New York, where city officials still continue to fight their use. ]See Food Delivery Workers Protest Electric Bike Ban.]
Despite officialdom's efforts, New Yorkers continue to embrace e-bikes and e-mopeds. Bert's leadership in offering them in his upper Manhattan store will eventually lead to their official acceptance, and when they are the Big Apple will be a better place for it.
